Lawrence Cheng
Consumer-related technologies, product development and marketing expertise

Lawrence is currently a Realtor™ but has spent almost 20 years in high-technology. He graduated with B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a special concentration in economics. After working at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Laboratories, Lawrence moved to Silicon Valley and was instrumental in bringing 3D graphics and videogaming to personal computers. He later helped XM Satellite Radio launch the first commercial satellite radio service in North America. Lawrence ran a product development consultancy for four years, and most recently worked at GridPoint, an energy management startup. Lawrence is also on the Board of Advisors at the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study at George Mason University.

Susan Fifer Canby
Libraries and information services expertise

Susan Fifer Canby is Vice President, emeritus, at National Geographic Society in Washington, DC where she has applied more than 34 years of information management experience to shape and direct the Society’s libraries and information services. She managed both the Society’s internal university, National Geographic Learning Systems and the enterprise intranet. She is currently on the SLA Board as Past Chapter Cabinet Chair representing 54 chapters in more than 80 countries. She is a past president of DC Special Libraries Association, DC Library Association, CAPCON Board, and former member of the OCLC Member’s Council. She is on the board of Special Libraries Association. She was recognized by SLA in 2001 as the Innovator of the Year, became a University of Maryland Alumna of the Year, 2004, and received the SLA Factiva Leadership Award in 2005. Her library has been recognized by SLA’s Business and Finance Division as a Center of Excellence for management. She was a Knight Fellow for the Salzburg Seminar, Libraries for the 21st Century (2004) and a Freeman Fellow for East West Relations (2005).

Sharon Flank, PhD
Linguistics, natural language, patent expertise

Currently Sharon is CEO of InfraTrac, a venture-backed start-up that uses advanced technology to detect counterfeits. Before that, she ran a consulting firm, DataStrategy, providing hands-on leadership in advanced technology applications to DataStrategy's portfolio companies. She is currently working with Emantix to establish a strong technology base to support a wide range of enterprise applications. Sharon previously served as CTO at eMotion, Inc., now part of Corbis. She holds five patents, and has six more pending. From 1988 to 1998, Sharon was a computational linguist at SRA International, building natural language processing and information retrieval systems. She designed and developed software for PNI, now Jupiter Media’s PictureQuest, which SRA spun off in 1993. She also served as Director of Digital Library Technology, locating and developing business opportunities in the areas of information management, bioinformatics, and multimedia archiving, search and retrieval. Sharon received her A.B. from Cornell University and her Ph.D. from Harvard in linguistics. She has taught at Georgetown, Harvard and Pace University, and has authored over 30 academic papers and presentations.

George Heidenrich
Business process methodologies, IT expertise

George has over 35 years of experience in information technology, business process management and related methodologies. His roles have included CIO, CTO, and COO, defining, managing, and assessing the successful delivery of business and technology solutions to meet commercial and government goals and objectives. George's technical experience includes methodology and countermeasure development, intellectual asset protection, physical and information security, network planning and management, systems integration, analysis and forecasting of business and technology trends, incident forensic analysis, and process improvement. Most recently, George was COO/CIO of D. Appleton Company, Inc., a leading business engineering think tank.

Brendan Ryan
Healthcare, Insurance industry expertise

Brendan is principal at Brendan Ryan Employee Benefits Consulting, a professional services firm specializing in employee benefits consulting, insurance placement and liaison, human resource outsourcing, employee mediation services, and benefits plan design. Before that, he was Senior Vice President and Manager of Employee Benefits and Retirement Plan Services for Sedgwick James of Virginia, where he directed the Benefits Practice in Sedgwick's Washington, Baltimore, Richmond area office.Brendan served for five years as one of eight members of the Sedgwick National Practice Board. Brendan served as Chairman of the Board, Arlington County, Virginia Chapter, American Red Cross and Chairman of the Board, Virginia/District of Columbia State Service Council, American Red Cross. Brendan has a degree from Georgetown University and attended University of Wisconsin Law School.
